Mitzi's Message: Self-Care Isn't Just a Buzzword Hello dear readers,
September was National Self-Care Awareness Month, a time when we're reminded of the importance of tending to our mind, body, and spirit. In the hustle of daily life, it's easy to forget that taking a moment for ourselves isn't a luxury—it's a necessity.
In our digital age, it can sometimes feel counterintuitive to use technology for
self-care, but there are tools out there designed with our well-being in mind. Take the Zensory app, for example. This innovative platform offers focus and relaxation techniques that truly help the mind unwind and recenter using the senses.
In order to take care of your body, it helps to understand it. I interviewed the author of a book on the female body, and it was enlightening. Whether you identify as female or are
simply interested in learning more, this book serves as a profound reminder of the miracles our bodies are capable of.
And, since we're speaking of rest and rejuvenation, let's not forget the paramount
importance of sleep. Lack of sleep can impact our memory, and increase our risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and depression. Our latest episode on sleep provides information about how to get more and better sleep, how to know when to seek help, and the typical changes in our sleep as we age.
Self-care is an ongoing journey, not a destination. The little moments we steal for
ourselves—the deep breaths, the stolen chapters of a book, the ten-minute
meditations—truly recharge our souls and our bodies. This September, prioritize yourself. After all, you can't pour from an empty cup.
Take good care,
Mitzi Krockover, MD

Lavender Chamomile Tea Latte
Ingredients:
2 cups water
2 teaspoons dried chamomile flowers
1 teaspoon dried lavender flowers (culinary-grade)
2 cups unsweetened almond or coconut milk (or any milk of your choice)
1-2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
A pinch of ground cinnamon (optional, or garnish)
Instructions:
1. In a small saucepan, bring the water to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and add the dried chamomile and lavender flowers. Let them steep for about 10 minutes.
2. Strain the tea to remove the chamomile and lavender flowers, and return the tea to the saucepan.
3. In a separate saucepan, warm the almond or coconut milk over low heat. Do not let it boil.
4. Combine the infused tea and warmed milk in a blender. Add honey or maple syrup and vanilla extract (if using).
5. Blend on low speed for about 30 seconds until the mixture is well combined and frothy.
6. Pour the lavender chamomile latte into mugs and garnish with a pinch of ground cinnamon if desired.
Notes:
- Chamomile is known for its mild sedative effects and can help calm nerves, making it a popular choice for relaxation.
- Lavender has aromatherapeutic properties that may aid in relaxation and sleep.
- Honey and maple syrup provide natural sweetness. Adjust the amount to your taste preference.
- Vanilla extract adds a pleasant flavor, but it's optional.
- Cinnamon is not only flavorful but can also offer additional health benefits.
This lavender chamomile tea latte is a soothing and fragrant drink that can be enjoyed in the evening to help promote relaxation and prepare for a restful night's sleep. Again, it's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have specific health concerns or dietary restrictions.
